Making Centerpieces
Every Thanksgiving Molly, Emily, Andrew, Aaron and I make centerpieces for the table out of ready-made pizza dough. We make the molds out of aluminum foil, wrap them in dough, apply an egg wash and then bake. It’s a fun tradition we enjoy together every year. This year Aaron and Andrew made a frog and Molly, Emily and I made a bunch of small cornucopias. Click on the photo above to view the album of the entire process and the final products.

That frog is AWESOME!! I can’t believe you made that. How long did that thing take??

Thanks, James. I think it toook about an hour or so.
Each year Andrew and I try to come up with a new animal to sculpt. In years past we’ve made a squid, a turtle, I think an armadillo. Our first idea, this year, was a lobster. We thought it would be especially fitting since it was likely served at the first colonial Thanksgiving. My sister nixed that idea on the basis that lobster wasn’t kosher… not a particularly strong argument since we wouldn’t be eating any actual lobster. In fact we wouldn’t even be eating a dough lobster since it was only a presentation piece.
So we settled on making a frog which came out pretty well. The irony of it all is that none of the animals we’d made in the past have been kosher… and neither was the frog.

So if lobsters aren’t kosher and hence should remain off the table does that mean I can go to the local store and find a kosher armadillo?

Absolutely… as long as they carry armadillos that have cloven hooves and that chew cud. Shalom.

Well documented family gathering. It makes me smile. However I noticed that the frog has one cloven hoof. Since you made it unintentionally I think we can still count it as kosher. Next year I say we go for the lobster! MOM

Agreed. But in order for that to get Lisa’s OK, we have to make our lobster seem like a fall-back position. What we’ll propose is a lobster riding a bacon cheeseburger.
