A Weekend for Emily

The above photo of Emily and I was taken 10 years ago, when she was about three. This past weekend Aaron and I traveled to DC to celebrate Emily’s Bat Mitzvah and her 13th Birthday. It was a fun (and satisfyingly exhausting) weekend of food, family and happy gatherings. Emily did a remarkable job and gave a thoughtful and moving speech about social responsibility that had many of us in tears. We were (and continue to be) a very proud aunt and uncle.

One of my favorite things about this book is that in this fictional world there are names given to ideas that ought to have names in the real world. For instance, Diax's Rake is the idea that you shouldn't believe something just because you want to. The name itself isn't that important, but I like that Stephenson recognizes that some ideas deserve to be acknowledged.

Like GTA in the Old West, but so far, more interesting. I just hope that the buddy characters don't require the same kid-gloved hand-holding from GTA4.
