Nothing Says Summer…

Aaron and Joe play bocce

Nothing says summer like a good game of bocce. On Monday night we enjoyed a delicious cookout at Amy and Joe’s and a good game of bocce. We played our typical partners, Amy and Aaron versus Joe and I. Joe and I started out strong, but Aaron and Amy came back to win it. There will be a re-match…hopefully the farther along Amy gets in her pregnancy, the more off balance she will be, giving Joe and I the edge we need. :)

Happy Birthday Rita!

Rita and Aaron

This past weekend Rita came up from DC to visit and celebrate her birthday. We had a relaxing weekend that included a delicious dinner at The Elephant Walk, lunch with my parents at The Black Cow, book shopping and lots of leisurely chats. Saturday night we just ordered in pizza and watched a movie (which I will post about later). It was a very nice visit.

For her birthday we ordered Rita an iSight camera that (once we have our new Macbook) will enable us to video chat/conference and “see” each other between visits. We’re excited to try it out.

Lull in Reality

TV icon

I can admit it..I love reality TV – the drama, the fights, the losing – all of it. So The Amazing Race is over and Tyler and BJ won (yeah!). On Survivor all the votes have been counted and Aras was the winner (boooo, I was routing for Terry or Cirie)… But all of a sudden the ‘Now Playing’ list on my Tivo only has the crappy shows Aaron is recording. What’s a reality TV junkie like me suppose to do now? I guess I’ll have to settle for Deadwood‘s season 2 on DVD.

A new toy for Aaron (…well ok, for both of us)

13" Macbook

Last night we finally ordered Aaron’s overdue anniversary/Christmas/birthday present. We have been shopping for a laptop for a while now and finally settled on Apple’s new 13″ MacBook. To say Aaron is excited about it would be a bit of an understatement – he’s more like a kid anxiously awaiting Christmas morning. He went to the Apple store in the mall yesterday to check it out in person and came home satisfied that it would suit our needs… So it’s ordered and now we just wait.

The bad kind of waterfront property…

Flood at Amy and Joe's

I am sorry to say that Amy and Joe now have first hand experience with the major flooding that is going on in this part of the state. The above picture is the lake that has accumulated in what used to be their back yard. It grew and grew and then started pouring into their basement. We went over last night to help them pump out. They had three pumps going and when we arrived the water level in their basement was close to 2 feet. Joe, Aaron, Jamie (Joe’s brother) and Peter worked into the early hours and managed to get the level down to about 2 inches with the help of a “super pump” my Dad managed to obtain for them. Unfortunately, when I checked in with them this morning, the water level was back up to 6 inches. Seems like its going to be an uphill battle until the rain stops and things start to dry out. Click on the above photo to see a few other shots of the flooding at their house.

Heavy with Rain

Flooding

So, it’s been raining here, on and off for about a week and over the weekend there were some real downpours. I grabbed the above photo from Yahoo, but it was taken in downtown Peabody, a neighborhood not too far from us. Roads are flooded and closed, streams and rivers are overflowing…it’s crazy. Many area schools are actually closed today… I wish I was still in high school.

Movie: Grizzly Man

Grizzly Man

Aaron and I saw Grizzly Man the other night. What a strange movie. It’s definitely worth seeing, but it’s quite bizarre. The movie tells the story of Timothy Treadwell who lived with grizzly bears for thirteen summers in Alaska. Then in October 2003, his remains, along with those of his girlfriend, were found near their campsite in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Reserve. A grizzly had killed them. Here are my thoughts on the film:

In the Family Way

Duck

Nobody panic or get all worked up, it’s not me :)

However, I am very excited to announce that Amy and Joe are expecting their first child later this summer. They have decided not to find out the gender ahead of time, so we will all be surprised when the baby is born. In the interim, we are referring to him/her as “Baby D.” This child will be the first grandchild for my folks and the first great grandchild for my grandmother Nonnie. Amy and Joe have painted their nursery yellow and gone with a ducky theme – hence the photo above.

It probably won’t surprise any of you to hear that Aaron has already started a ‘toys and games to buy’ list. Needless to say we are ALL very excited and anxiously awaiting this new member of our family.
