A Golfing Thank You

The last time this group of four was together, they were in water up to their knees, dressed in gortex, armed with pumps and brooms, fighting a flood. This past Sunday, as a thank you for their help during the big rain that flooded Amy and Joe’s basement, Joe took Aaron, Peter and Jamie out for a morning of golf. They played nine holes at Reedy Meadow in Lynnfield. Aaron reports that they had a great time and hit a bunch of “almost pars.” To see Aaron’s photos from the outing click the image above.

A few remarks on the photos in the gallery:
- The pics of the carts were taken from carts moving at full speed. Admittedly, that’s about 13mph, but I’m surprised they weren’t blurry.
- I forget who took the picture, but the one where I’m taking a shot is a fair representation of my game. You can clearly see from where the ball is in the frame that its trajectory will take it a good ten to twelve yards.
- Everyone else kept their own scores, but I opted not to because, really, in the end, who wants to add nine three-digit numbers?
- Neither my poor skill at golf nor general lack of macro-motor coordination detracted from my enjoyment of the day. The key is not taking it seriously. I had a great time.

One of my favorite things about this book is that in this fictional world there are names given to ideas that ought to have names in the real world. For instance, Diax's Rake is the idea that you shouldn't believe something just because you want to. The name itself isn't that important, but I like that Stephenson recognizes that some ideas deserve to be acknowledged.

Like GTA in the Old West, but so far, more interesting. I just hope that the buddy characters don't require the same kid-gloved hand-holding from GTA4.
