We started the day with a visit to Culloden Battlefield and Museum. In April, 1746 Bonnie Prince Charlie lost decisively there to the government forces bringing an end to the Jacobite rebellion. Shortly after the battle the government began to crack down on Jacobitism by executing the captured soldiers and outlawing many aspects of Gaelic culture. Since we were there after the high season, there were few other visitors which gave the experience an even more solemn tone.
We headed a bit more east to visit Castle Cawdor. We didn’t have time to go inside, but we explored its beautiful formal gardens. From there, we left the highlands and plunged southward through Cairngorms National Park toward our destination of Pitlochry
